Who is Ed Slott and why should you care?

Ed Slott is a nationally recognized retirement account distribution expert and has been called “The Best” source of IRA advice by The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of The Retirement Savings Time Bomb among many other books and publications. Ed is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Fortune, Forbes, Money and USA Today. If his name sounds familiar, you may have seen one his nationally aired Public Television fundraising specials. He has also appeared on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox and National Public Radio.

Tom Chaney is a member of Ed Slott’s Elite IRA Advisor Group, an exclusive group of professional advisors who are dedicated to furthering their expertise in retirement account distribution planning. This group is designed to provide its members ongoing access to the most up-to- date retirement account information available to properly and professionally service their clients who hold IRA, TSP, 401k and other retirement accounts. According to Ed Slott, many Advisors want to provide advice in the best interest of their clients, and now with the new Department of Labor (DOL) legislation, are legally required to do so. However, without the knowledge to adhere to the ‘Best Interest Standard’ set forth in the Fiduciary Rule, many uninformed advisors may be inadvertently doing their clients a disservice.

As a member in the Ed Slott Elite Advisor Group, Tom Chaney is required to personally attend two of Ed Slott’s workshops each year. Highlights of these workshops include: estate tax reduction strategies; advanced IRA trust planning, including when and when not to name a trust as your IRA beneficiary; charitable IRA rollovers; IRA creditor protections strategies; overcoming IRA rollover challenges; Roth characterization; IRA withdrawal strategies; and much more. Tom is a advocate of investing in himself through education. “Working with Ed Slott and Company’s team of retirement account experts has provided me with the most advanced, in-depth retirement training available. I have been associated with numerous Broker Dealers (BD’s) throughout my 30+ years as a financial advisor. I have attended numerous workshops, seminars and due-diligence meetings. There is absolutely no comparison between the training and education provided by Broker Dealers to that of Ed Slott and Company”, said Mr. Chaney.

Why should you care? According to Ed Slott, less than 1% of financial advisors receive specialized training in retirement account distributions. You work decades to provide a nest egg for your retirement. Don’t mess it up now. “Failure to know the rules and use them to your advantage can result in needless taxation and penalties. Don’t mess up your retirement in the second half” says Chaney.
